Relays are electrically operated switch that can be turned on or off by energizing their in-built coil (mechanical model).

They are very easy to control with low voltages, like the 5V provided by an Arduino Board. If you know how to turn on an LED with some programming skills, then it will be an easy job for you to control relays for your next project.
